HERALDIC RESEARCH

Coat of Arms

Background Information

February 2000 -- The Coat of Arms I have depicted here is mentioned in Burkes General Armorials, 1851 Edition and is described as follows:

Webster (Battle-Abbey, county Sussex, bart. England) Azure (blue) on a bend Argent (silver) cotised Or (gold), between two demi lions rampant, Ermine, a rose Gules (red), seeded and leaved Proper (natural colour), between two boars' heads couped Sable (black) langued on the fifth (i.e. red). Crest - A dragon's head couped reguardant quarterly, per fess embattled Vert (green) and Or (gold), flames issuing from the mouth Proper (natural colour). Motto - Fides et justitia (Faith and Justice).

Although our family history can be traced back to Scotland, there is significant evidence to suggest a connection with this English Coat of Arms. Note here the all green crest.

Firstly with the heraldic charges, whilst the Lion Rampart is the principle animal in English Heraldry, the Boar's Head has particular significance in Scottish Heraldry.

Secondly and of personal significant importance is that this crest and wreath depicted on the Coat of Arms actually matches our own Family Crest, however our Motto is different being "Vincit Veritas" which means Truth Conquers. Variations are often found in the Crests and Mottos used by various branches of the one family and sometimes records of crests and mottos can not be traced.

Our family crest and motto can be found under Webster of Murlingden, Scotland, listed in Fairbairn's Book of Crests - 2I. p. 497 (4th ed. 1905 ?). It is described as:

Webster of Murlingden, Sco., a wyvern's head, erased, vert., Vincit Veritas, pl. 107, cr. 10, (without collar).

The curious point here is that the dragon's or wyvern's head is an English heraldic symbol.
